THE ROOM TELLS THE STORY
sis boom bah
May 2004

Imagine a world in which your heart is a stuffed
and embroidered piece of fabric that can be
given away, stolen, lost, or torn to pieces. Four
original stories about such a world, inspired by
traditional folk songs, are told through decorative
arts including wallpaper, printed textiles, rugs,
quilts, embroidery, dioramas and soft sculpture.

The gallery was transformed to look like four
rooms, in which each item tells part of a story.
Visitors were invited to sit in the rooms and
read the stories, which were bound as
handmade books. This show was funded by the
Ontario Arts Council.

THE MAMMAL SHOW
sis boom bah
June 2003

The “Mammals” are hybrid soft-sculpture
animals constructed from wool felt, fox fur, and
rabbit fur on wire frames. These characters were
photographed in collaboration with Natalie
Matutschovsky to illustrate scenes described in
country and western songs. The exhibition
comprised the sculptures and the photographs.

Viewers at the show opening engaged with the
exhibition through “The Mammal Judging.” In
this performance piece, judges and
commentators selected the “Best in Show”
mammal.

9 TRAGEDIES
Art System
April 18, 2002

Nine portraits represent the victims and villains
of traditional folk murder ballads. The faces are
taken from found turn-of-the-century
photographs, and are executed in pieced
watercolour-stained felt. Each portrait is
embroidered with the lyrics to the ballad that
inspired it.

The one-night event at Art System combined
Goodchild’s textile portraits with a concert, in
which nine female country singers each sang one
of the murder ballads.
